Helen Forschini

Helen Foschini, 93, of Oswego passed away Thursday August 27, 2009 at Sunrise Nursing Home. She was born April 5, 1916 in Oswego to the late John and Mary (Rodguinez) Galletta. Helen attended the Oswego Schools. She worked at the Mills in Oswego. She was predeceased by her husband Angelo “Ralph” Foschini in 1968, and her brothers John and George Galletta and sister Rose Driscoll. Helen is survived by her niece, Martha Driscoll of Syracuse, and her nephews George (Laura) Galletta of Minetto, Joseph (Charlene) Galletta of Oswego, and John (Betty) Galletta of DeWitt, and several grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 Monday at St. Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Andrew Baranski. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home 147 West Fourth Street Oswego. Contributions maybe made to St Joseph Church or a charity of your choice.

Leila M. Foster, 91, of 299 E. River Rd., Oswego, a former Minetto resident, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, in St. Luke Health Services. She is survived by one grandson, John “JR” C. Foster Jr.; one brother, Frank (Jean) Colwell; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Nettleton and Joan Geary; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 24, at Sugar and Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. 4th St., Oswego. The funeral service will be noon Tuesday, August 25, in Minetto United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Minetto Cemetery in Minetto. Memorial contributions may be made to the Minetto United Methodist Church Organ Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 217, Minetto, NY, 13115.

Justine E. SipserJustine E. Sipser, 80, of Oswego, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17th, at St. Luke Health Services, Oswego.
Ms. Sipser was born November 15, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Clara Richter, Esq, and Dr. Joseph Richter.
She was educated in the Brooklyn schools as a child and was a proud graduate of Brooklyn College with a major in elementary education, graduating in 1949.
Ms. Sipser started her career teaching elementary education in inner city schools within the New York City School System. Upon her relocation to Oswego with her family in 1967, she was briefly employed in Penfield Library prior to becoming the beloved librarian at Riley School.  She could captivate a group of children by reading a story to them and then engaging them in a conversation about it.  One of her favorite books was “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.”
In 1971, Ms. Sipser began attending Syracuse University and graduated in 1974 with a Masters Degree in Library Science.
On a personal note, Ms. Sipser enjoyed many aspects of the fine arts. She was an avid reader. She played several musical instruments, including piano, clarinet and violin. She participated in volunteer bands and musical ensembles to the delight of many audiences. She studied French and Italian. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Ms. Sipser was a long-time supporter of the SUNY Oswego Theater Department, WRVO public radio and many charitable organizations.
Ms. Sipser was captivated by Oswego’s part as an American Refugee camp for Jews during the Holocaust. She was a fighter for peace throughout her entire life. She admired Eleanor and Franklin D Roosevelt and many other great political figures who brought out the best in people.
Ms. Sipser had a great sense of humor. She appreciated good jokes. Her famous and true cat and turkey story was legion in Riley School, and everyone agreed that it was important to hear the story from Justine herself to truly appreciate it.
Ms. Sipser is survived by  her son, Michael (Ina Batuner) Sipser of Cambridge, Massachusetts; her daughters, Karen (Harry) Fisch of Scarsdale and Laura (Joel) Segel of Needham, Massachusetts; sister, Irma (Elliot) Brunner of Sarasota, Florida; seven grandchildren, David, Rachel, Melissa, Sam, Aaron, Eve and Jesse.
A private funeral will be held. There are no calling hours. Burial was in Congregation Adath Israelat Riverside Cemetery, Oswego. The arrangements were in the care of the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home 147 West Fourth Street Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ms Sipser’s name to the Theater Department of SUNY Oswego or WRVO.

Charlotte J. Plata

Charlotte J. Plata, 87; of Fulton died Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Oswego Hospital after a long illness.  She was born in Ellisburg, NY and she has been a resident of Fulton since 1950.  Mrs. Plata retired from Sealright Corp., Fulton.  She was pre-deceased by her sister Donna Hallett.  Mrs. Plata is survived by her husband of 58 years Ralph Plata of Fulton, her son Thomas Plata of NC, her daughter Tamara (Anthony) Santiogo of CA, her sister Lucille Veley of Mannsville, NY, granddaughter Nicole Plata and grandson Christian Plata.  Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc., 224 W. 2nd St. S. Fulton with Rev. Jeffrey Knox officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fulton.  Calling hours will be held 9:00  to 11:00 AM Thursday in the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc.

Mildred E. BuskeyMildred E. Buskey, 80; of Fulton died Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Oswego Hospital.  She was born in Waterbury, VT.  She has been a resident of Fulton for most of her life.  Mrs. Buskey was past employed with Birdseye, Fulton and Comstock, Red Creek, NY.  She was an avid bingo player who also enjoyed word searches.  Mrs. Buskey was pre-deceased by her first husband Lawrence C. Searor in 1986, her second husband John Buskey in 1995, her brother Wilbur Junior Brown, son-in-law Robert Crocker, and daughter-in-law Laurie Searor.  She is survived by her 8 children:  Mary Goutermout of Fulton, Joyce Sherman of Hannibal, Adelaide Hotaling of Fulton, Lawrence (Katherine) Searor Jr. of Hannibal, Frank Searor, Robert Searor, and John Searor all of Fulton, Kathy Crocker of Clyde, NY, 4 siblings William (Mona) Brown of VT, Robert Brown of MA, Geraldine Carrier of VT, Kathleen “Shirley” Cook of Hannibal, 22 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.    Calling hours will be held 4:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc. 224 W. 2nd St. S. Fulton.

Virginia Gifford, 86; of Fulton died at St. Luke Health Services, Oswego, NY.  She was born to the late Milton and Matilda Baldwin in Orange, MA. She was a resident of the Fulton area all of her life.  She was a past member of the Minetto United Methodist Church Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Gifford was pre-deceased by her husband Robert Gifford in 1997, infant daughter Marilyn Gifford and her brother Frank Baldwin.  She is survived by her sons Donald (Rhoda) Gifford of Minetto, NY; Jack (Marilyn) Gifford of NC, and Robert  (Marty) Gifford of PA, her siblings William (Annamae) Baldwin, Milton (Nancy) Baldwin, Lewis (Colleen) Baldwin, and Joan (Robert) Smith all of Fulton, several grandchildren, great grandchildren nieces and nephews.  Funeral Services:  12:00 PM Monday in the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc., 224 W. 2nd St. S. Jamie DuplessisJamie Duplessis, 32; was born in Oswego, NY and remained a life resident of Fulton.  Jamie was employed with Constellation, Scriba, NY as a Security Guard.  He was formerly employed for eight years with B.J.’s Outdoor Power and Equipment, Inc.  Jamie was a United States Veteran having served in the Army and Army National Guard 427th SB serving a term from 1996 to 2004 as a Specialist/E-4.  During his active duty Jamie was stationed in Germany and Bosnia as a Combat Engineer 82nd Engineers/101st Airborne Division.  He received the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal and Army Physical Fitness Badges.  Jamie was graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2004 from the NYS University at Oswego with a Bachelor of Science in Finance Management.  He enjoyed weigh lifting at the Fulton YMCA, camping and spending time outdoors.  Jamie was a hard worker and strived to be the best that he could be in all areas of his life.  Jamie was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents:  Verdine and Emma Hall.  He is survived by his parents Loreen and Robert Duplessis of Fulton, his sister Kara Duplessis of Fulton, paternal grandparents:  Joseph and Dorothy Duplessis of Central Square, NY, his niece Aaliyah Freeman and nephew Jayden Freeman both of Fulton, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Memorial Services: 5:00 pm Friday at the Church of the Nazarene 914 Utica St. Fulton.  Burial will be private.  There will be no calling hours.  The Sugar Funeral Home, Inc., 224 W. 2nd St. S. Barbara J. Lisk, 67, of Minetto, died Tuesday in her home after a short illness. She was born in Oswego the daughter of the late Balz and Elizabeth (Schiessor) Schwitter. Mrs. Lisk was a former teacher’s aide for the Oswego School District working at the Minetto Elementary School. She was the treasurer for the Oswego County Visually Impaired. Mrs. Lisk was predeceased by her husband Joseph Lisk in 1996 and her brothers David, Francis, and Robert Schwitter. Mrs. Lisk is survived by her son Jeffrey (Melissa) Lisk of Oswego, her daughter Cathleen (Michael) Klemenz of Liverpool. In addition to her children Mrs. Lisk is survived by her brothers and sisters James (Shirley) Schwitter of Oswego, Carl Schwitter of Oswego, John (Carole) Schwitter of Hannibal, Mary ( E.T.) Jones of Fulton, Kathyrn (Clyde) Creighton of Fulton, Alice Ketchum of Oswego, Mildred Durfee of Chittenango, Janet Engle of Oswego, and Doris Schwitter of Oswego, and four grandchildren, Sophia and Matthew Klemenz, Zemiah Phrance and Zoe Lisk.
