John L. Dyer, 96, a former resident of Fulton, and of Bishop Commons, Oswego died Thursday in the Oswego Hospital. Mr. Dyer was born in Newburgh, NY the son of the late John and Lillian (Gogarty) Dyer. Mr. Dyer, a graduate of Columbia University School of Pharmacy, he owned and operated Dyer’s Pharmacy in Newburgh, NY, for many years before moving to Fulton in 1970 where he was a Pharmacist for many local Pharmacy’s including Wayne’s in Fulton and Oswego and P&C Markets. Mr. Dyer was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary; he was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Dyer was an usher, lector and Eucharistic minister for many years at Holy Family Church, Fulton. Mr. Dyer was predeceased by his wife Harriet (Crahan) Dyer in 1994, and thier infant son John Dyer. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Mary and David Roman of Oswego, his granddaughter Elizabeth Roman, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday 8:30 a.m. from the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home and 9:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in All Saints Mausoleum. Calling hours will be Sunday 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home 147 West Fourth St. Oswego. Contributions may be made in John Dyer’s name to the John Foster Burden Fund c/o Bishop Commons. The family would like to thank the staff of Bishop Commons and the nurses at Gentiva, for their kind compassionate care.

During the mid 50’s, when I was in high school , I worked at Dyer’s Pharmacy on Liberty St. in Newburgh. John was an excellant pharmacist, honest businessman and good teacher. I learned much during those years.
